West Bengal CM reiterates that opposition should work together to take on BJP

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday reiterated that all political parties in the opposition should work together to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that there is no point in relying on the Congress. “Congress is not interested. They are losing their credibility,” he said while talking to reporters on the results of assembly elections in five states. Of the five states where elections were held, the BJP retained power in four.

According to Ms Banerjee, the BJP has not won the popular mandate in Uttar Pradesh because of the increase in the voting percentage and the number of seats won by the Samajwadi Party (SP). “Akhilesh” [Yadav] Must not be sad. They should demand forensic evaluation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs),” the chief minister said.

Ms Banerjee also said that the BJP has benefited from the division of opposition votes among different camps in Uttar Pradesh. “She [Mr. Akhilesh Yadav] Fight alone like Abhimanyu and this is not a popular mandate for the BJP,” she said.

Ms Banerjee tried to question the BJP leadership’s claims of returning to power at the Center in 2024. Describing such observations as “impractical”, he said it was “very difficult to predict what would happen in the next two years”.

Asked about the performance of the Trinamool Congress in Goa, where the party failed to win a single seat, he said that in a short span of three months, his party got 6% of the votes, which was “more than enough”. On the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) supporting the BJP in Goa, Ms Banerjee said it was agreed in the pre-poll alliance that the parties would not support the BJP. “We do not have any member (MLA). so they [the MGP] Decide your own policy. We don’t like it,” she said.
