Over 3,000 people booked for violating traffic rules in Cuddalore during Pongal

Over 3,000 people were booked in Cuddalore district for violating traffic rules, including riding two-wheelers without helmets, driving without seat belts and using their mobile phones while driving, during the Pongal holidays.

While the Cuddalore district police booked 657 people for various violations on January 14, 1,331 were booked on January 15, and 1,080 and 843 on January 16 and 17, respectively.

The district police compiled violations registered on Pongal, Thiruvalluvar day and Kannam Pongal to arrive at the numbers.

Superintendent of Police S. Sakthi Ganesan said the police have increased investigations across the district, which has led to a rise in the number of cases registered. Teams attached to 46 stations were stationed at 84 temporary check-posts across the district to check violations.

Mr Ganesan said the maximum violations were for non-helmet riders and pillar riders, who accounted for 2,213 cases. This was followed by not wearing a seat belt (166), using a mobile phone while driving (124) and speeding (104).
