PCC passed resolution seeking to make Rahul Gandhi Congress President is not binding: Jairam Ramesh

With the passing of the resolution by the State Congress Committees Rahul Gandhi Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, led by the AICC, said on Tuesday that such measures have no binding effect. Amid indications that Congress leader Shashi Tharoor would contest the party’s presidential election, Ramesh also said that anyone can contest for the post, but he personally preferred to build consensus around a candidate.

Speaking to reporters during the break time of the Bharat Jodi Yatra, he said that if a consensus was not possible, the party was ready for elections and 9,000 PCC representatives would democratically elect the President.

Asked about the seven PCCs passing a resolution to make Gandhi the party president, the former Union minister said Congressmen are excited as they are seeing Gandhi walking for the past 13 days.

“But nobody asked anyone to pass any resolution. There is enthusiasm among the workers of Congress party. Rahul Gandhi has not asked anyone to pass any resolution. The Congress President did not ask anyone. They have been watching Gandhi walking for the last 13 days. He knows the pain he is going through every day. They can all relate to him. It is natural that they pass the resolution. But the resolution has no binding effect,” Ramesh said.

He said whether Gandhi would contest the election or not, it would be known between 24 and 30. At present, the party’s Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir units have passed the resolution. Ramesh said that at present the focus of the Congress party is on the ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’ being led by Gandhi.

“However, in elections, anyone is free to contest. It is an open process. You don’t need to take permission from Rahul Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi. If you have the support of 10 PCC representatives, you can file nomination papers and the election will be held on October 17.

The senior Congress leader also said that if there is no nomination and a consensus is reached on the candidate, the new president will be announced on October 1.

“I would prefer a consensus to develop around a candidate and if that is not possible then go to the polls. 9,000 delegates will elect the President.

He said the 137-year-old party had to hold elections only four times in the past to select its president. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was elected for the first time in 1938. Then in 1950, 1997 and 2000.

“The entire party is engaged in making #BharatJodoYatra a success. Yet it is important to reiterate that any member is welcome to contest for Congress President. It is a democratic and transparent process. No one needs anyone’s approval, especially the party leadership, to contest elections.

Addressing the press, he also alleged that the CPI(M) was the BJP’s A-team in Kerala and alleged that the Left in Kerala was trying to weaken the Congress party and strengthen the BJP. The senior Congress leader said that the party may organize similar yatras from west to east of the country next year and also said that shorter yatras will be organized in the states of West Bengal, Odisha and Assam from where the current yatra is entering. is not doing.

When asked about Congress MLAs joining BJP in Goa, Ramesh said, “Goa is an operation washing machine where BJP goes and buys MLAs.”
