2021 Yamaha R15 V4 and R15M get a lot of upgrades to further improve performance

It was quite a surprise when Yamaha Motor India launched the new YZF-R15 V4 earlier this year. Coming within three years of the launch of the R15 V3.0, the V4 has enough upgrades that make it a better motorcycle than ever. India is the first market to get the R15 V4 globally, which shows how important the motorcycle is to Yamaha India. The R15 has been an impressive machine over the past three generations and there is little that shows that the new model will be any different. While we haven’t ridden a motorcycle yet, here is a list of pros and cons that you should consider before bringing it home.

The new front and overall design language of Yamaha R7. takes signal from

professionals

  1. The new R15 V4 is clearly updated in comparison to the V3. The model borrows styling cues from the larger YZF-R7, replacing the twin units with single projector lens headlamps, while there are new LED DRLs on either side. The sculpted fuel tank is new and so is the redesigned fairing. The model also gets a revised tail section with new rider and pillar seats.
  2. The new Yamaha YZF R15 V4 gets 37 mm USD forks at the front with thick outer tubes that are attached to the chassis for better rigidity. This is a major update from the telescopic forks over the predecessor and promises better control while braking and cornering. The motorcycle also gets a new triple clamp for a better balance between strength and stiffness.
  3. The same 155 cc liquid-cooled engine is being used on the Yamaha R15 V4 which continues as before. That said, power has dropped to 18.1 bhp at 10,000 rpm, while peak torque is now 14.2 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The fuel-injected motor with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) is mated to the same 6-speed gearbox as before.
  4. The new R15 now gets traction control and quickshifter. It is standard on the Racing Blue color and R15M versions. It gets a new fully digital negative LCD console with slip and assist clutch and dual-channel ABS as well as two displays- Track and Street.
  5. Yamaha also offers the new R15 V4 in two main variants – Standard and R15M which brings an aesthetic upgrade to the bike and gives a choice to the customer.

The USD front fork on the Yamaha R15 V4 is a major update on the motorcycle and promises better handling and stability than the older model.

Shortcoming

  1. The riding posture of the R15 V4 remains aggressive. While this is a part of the track-friendly nature of the motorcycle, some road riders will find it dedicated for day-to-day use. The same goes for the rear seater who won’t be very comfortable on long rides.
  2. The R15M is notably expensive at ₹1.79 lakh (ex-showroom), which makes it significantly more expensive than the older version, bringing it closer to the more powerful KTM RC 200.
  3. The ride quality of the Yamaha R15 V4 remains tight and this will be another shortcoming for someone who is looking for a quite comfortable motorcycle for day to day use. Though for the avid rider, the ride quality has always been adequate.
