In Shimla, posters like ‘Swearing in the dream will be broken’ and ‘Jairam ji’s swearing-in’ can be seen in a multi-storey parking lot near Mall Road. It is the hoarding agency that seems to be laughing in its own way while the locals watch the fight with great amusement

Shimla’s Mall Road is the centerpiece of the state capital, and the multi-storey car parking near Mall Road is the entry point for most people. This multi-storey building has now become the center of battle for hoardings of BJP and Congress, where both are targeting each other.

It is the hoarding agency that seems to be laughing in its own way while the locals watch the fight with great amusement. Himachal Pradesh is like a ‘soft state’ in terms of elections where the political temperature is not so high or bitter like West Bengal or Uttar Pradesh. Interestingly, the Congress office is located adjacent to this parking lot and the party has scattered the area with its hoardings. The BJP has also set up its ‘media office’ here and hence the poster war came.

A few days back the Congress had put up a big hoarding here with the slogan ‘Aa Rahi Hai Congress’ (Congress is coming) along with its party symbol. The BJP responded by putting up a large hoarding with an arrow symbol next to it and saying ‘Jairam ji’s swearing-in’ (CM Jai Ram Thakur coming to the swearing-in ceremony) alluding to the Congress. BJP functionaries say they are not “officially” behind these hoardings, but it is their supporters who are answering the Congress.

BJP office-bearers allege that Congress workers tore up the BJP-supported hoardings. A few days ago, the Congress had put up a new hoarding on the multi-storey parking building in defiance of the BJP’s old hoarding, which said that ‘Swearing dream will be broken, because aa hai Congress’ coming). BJP supporters were quick to respond with another hoarding next to the Congress, ‘Phir se oppona mein’ (again in opposition) to claim that the Congress is coming again, but in opposition.

A BJP functionary said that the multi-storey parking near Mall Road is a prominent spot in Shimla visible from afar, hence the poster war. “The poster war has heated things up in Himachal Pradesh, a state that does not otherwise see an aggressive campaign. For the BJP, the victory here is that the poster war has been won by the BJP on both the occasions and our content is the same which went viral,” said the BJP functionary.

Who wins on December 8th matters the most to both parties.
