Praful Patel urges FIFA not to ban India, urges time to complete elections

Fearing suspension from the world football governing body, Patel urged the sport’s world governing body, in the capacity of a member of the FIFA Council, to give India until the end of July to complete the election process.

“I request FIFA and AFC not to impose the suspension at this stage, but to consider this important aspect of the Supreme Court order and negotiate with the CoA to obtain a commitment that the Supreme Court has There will be a stipulated time frame. To be respected and strictly followed without delay,” he wrote in a letter.

Patel said, “I also appeal to the experienced legal teams of AFC and FIFA to guide the CoA if the AIFF rules need to be amended.”

Patel said any suspension from AIFF would also threaten the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers, which India is hosting in Kolkata from June 8, 2022, for which all preparations have been completed.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant and PS Narasimha said that the CoA will consist of Justice Dave, Dr. SY Qureshi, former chief. Election Commissioner, and Bhaskar Ganguly, former captain of the Indian football team.

The bench had said that the CoA would assist the court in facilitating the adoption of the Constitution by the AIFF in accordance with the National Sports Code and model guidelines.
