Present proof of deletion of names of voters from Yadav, Muslim communities: Election Commission to Akhilesh

Almost a month after the president of the Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav alleged that Election The commission had deliberately removed the names of around 20,000 voters from Yadav and Muslim communities in around 403 assembly constituencies on the request of the BJP, after the election body asked the UP leader to produce evidence to substantiate his claim.

The statement accusing the Election Commission of misconduct was given at the national convention of SP on 29 September. However, no formal complaint was filed with the Election Commission. The election body’s move comes in view of the “extremely serious” nature of the allegations leveled by Yadav, who is known to be a veteran politician from Uttar Pradesh.

Election Commission asked for documents from Yadav

The poll watchdog on Thursday asked Akhilesh Yadav to submit documents to validate his claim by November 10.

The Election Commission’s communication also sought assembly-wise data on the number of voter names deleted from Yadav and the alleged wrongly deleted names. Other documents requested by the Election Commission were supporting documents of such wrongful deletions and complaints by party officials with any election officials during the electoral list or summary revision of the 2022 Assembly elections, reported ANI.

Demanding the politician to produce such evidence, the Election Commission also clarified that no complaint has been filed by any SP leader regarding the removal of 20,000 voters in any UP constituency after November 1, 2021. Till the conclusion of the election, no complaint was filed by the SP candidate except one. From Aliganj Assembly Constituency of Etah district who alleged to have diverted 10,000 voters (from minority and scheduled castes).

Upon investigation, however, it was revealed that the allegations were baseless and did not hold any factual value.

Further, defending its stand, the electoral body reiterated that the SOP has set out to leave no scope for mass deletion of names to such an extent. The Election Commission further said that to ensure that there is no indiscriminate deletion of voters, specific safeguards are in place in the system.
