President Draupadi Murmu visits Belur Math in Howrah, West Bengal

President Draupadi Murmu on March 28 visited the famous Belur Math, the global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda in the late 19th century.

Ms. Murmu was welcomed by the General Secretary of the Mission, Swami Suvirandaji Maharaj. She will visit the main temple of the mutt and Swami Vivekananda’s room in the compound.

The temple architecture of the monastery complex is notable for its blend of Hindu, Islamic, Christian and Buddhist art and motifs and attracts thousands of visitors on most days from across the country and the world. However, on Tuesday, the Math is closed for all other visitors till 10 am in view of the President’s security.

Later in the morning, the President will attend the celebrations of UCO Bank’s completion of 80 years of service as a bank. The President is scheduled to travel to Santiniketan later in the day to attend the annual convocation ceremony of Visva-Bharati University, founded by poet laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Ms. Murmu reached Kolkata on 27 March and visited Netaji Bhawan, where Subhash Chandra Bose, the icon of India’s independence movement, lived. He also visited Jorasanko, the Tagore family home.

He was given a civic reception in the evening at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, where Governor CV Anand Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee were present.
