Prithviraj Kapoor’s death anniversary: ​​Best films of Hindi cinema stalwarts

From Prithviraj to his son, grandson/granddaughter and great-grandson/granddaughter, five generations of the Kapoor family have now worked in Bollywood films.

Prithviraj Kapoor, a legendary filmmaker and actor, was one of the few pioneers of Hindi cinema and theatre. He opened up opportunities in films for the next generations of the Kapoor family. Born to Basheswarnath Kapoor, Prithviraj initially showcased his acting skills in the silent era of Hindi films and then changed the course of cinema in our country with his brilliant ideas and work. From Alamara to Mughal-e-Azam, his works have gained worldwide recognition. For the development of the film industry in India, he also founded a traveling theater company named Prithvi Theaters in the 1940s.

From Prithviraj to his son, grandson/granddaughter and great-grandson/granddaughter, five generations of the Kapoor clan have now acted in Bollywood films.

Prithviraj died on 29 May 1972. On his death anniversary, let’s take a look at some of his best films.

  1. Alam Ara (1931)
    The first sound film of Indian cinema made in 1931 left its mark in history. The film was directed by Ardeshir Irani and starred Master Vitthal, Zubeiya and Prithviraj Kapoor. The film is also said to have introduced the concept of songs in Indian films.
  2. Sikandar (1941)
    Prithviraj was known for his work as Sikandar, Mahan or Sikandar in this film. The film is set in 326 BC, when Alexander conquered Persia and the Kabul Valley and approached the Indian borders. The film was directed by Sohrab Modi and also starred Vanmala.
  3. Anand Math (1952)
    Prithviraj-starrer Anand Math is a 1952 patriotic-historical film based on the famous Bengali novel Anandamath written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. The film was directed by Hemen Gupta and starred alongside Prithviraj, Bharat Bhushan, Geeta Bali, Pradeep Kumar and Ajith.
  4. Mughal-e-Azam (1960)
    The biggest hit of its time, the historical drama features Mughal prince Salim falling in love with a court dancer and fighting for his love with his father, Akbar. The film was directed by K. Asif did it and Prithviraj shared screen space with veteran actors Dilip Kumar and Madhubala in it.
  5. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1971)
    The film depicts three generations of the Kapoor family. Prithviraj, his son Raj Kapoor and grandson Randhir Kapoor were seen together in the film. The film also starred Babita, who married the film’s director Randhir in the same year.
