Punjab has declared a holiday on April 27 as a mark of respect to former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

A report in the Indian Express states that in view of the demise of former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the state government has declared tomorrow i.e. April 27 as a public holiday.

According to reports, all government offices, educational institutions, banks in the state will remain closed as a mark of respect to the former chief minister. The central government has also announced two days of national mourning. His last rites will be performed on April 27 at 1 pm in his native village Badal.

Today his supporters and supporters will gather at the party office in Chandigarh to pay their last respects. Party leaders told ANI that Badal’s body will be kept at the Shiromani Akali Dal office in Chandigarh from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm on Wednesday to pay last respects. PM Modi will also reach Chandigarh today to pay last respects to the former CM of Punjab.

Shiromani Akali Dal The father died on Tuesday in a private hospital in Mohali. He was 95 years old. He was admitted to the ICU on April 21 after complaining of shortness of breath.

Parkash Singh Badal was the Chief Minister of Punjab several times. He was the CM from 1970–1971, 1977–1980, 1997–2002 and 2007–2017. He was also the youngest Chief Minister to hold the position in the state of Punjab. Badal’s governments focused on the farmers. An important decision was to introduce free electricity for agriculture. His party broke ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020 over the farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s new agricultural laws. He also returned the Padma Vibhushan award he received in 2015.

Fortis Hospital in its official media bulletin said, “Former Chief Minister of Punjab S. Parkash Singh Badal was admitted to Fortis Hospital Mohali on 16th April, 2023 with acute exacerbation of Bronchial Asthma. He was shifted to Medical ICU on 18th.” His respiratory condition worsened in April. He was on NIV and HFNC support along with medical management.”

“He was being managed under Prof (Dr) Digambar Behera with pulmonology and critical care team supported by cardiology. S Prakash Singh Badal succumbed to his illness despite proper medical management. Fortis Hospital Mohali S Prakash Singh Deeply condoles the death of Badal,” the statement added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death and said that Badal was a towering figure of Indian politics, and a remarkable statesman who contributed immensely to our country.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Shri Parkash Singh Badal ji. He was a towering figure in Indian politics, and a remarkable statesman who contributed immensely to our country.
