Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar said on Sunday that the party’s national leader Rahul Gandhi He will attend his Political Affairs Committee meeting on August 2, amid the uproar ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections, as he will be in the state to attend the 75th birthday party of senior leader Siddaramaiah. He will also visit Murugarajendra Math, the major Lingayat madrassa of the region, during the visit.
“On August 3, Rahul Gandhi wishes to meet the Muruga Math seer (Shri Shivamurthy Murugh Sharanaru) of Chitradurga and other saints. Earlier on the evening of August 2, he would meet around 35 state leaders of the party’s State Political Affairs Committee in Hubli. Talking to reporters here after meeting the saint at the Math, he said, “Rahul Gandhi will attend the 75th birthday celebrations of Siddaramaiah at Davangere on August 3, after which he will leave for New Delhi via Hubli.”
Gandhi’s visit to Davangere and other major monasteries in and around Davangere is still being worked out, as he will visit the region once again during the Congress’ ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’ in September and think about whether to visit other monasteries. can be planned, he added. The visit comes at a time when the Congress in Karnataka is in a dilemma, as many within the party fear it might explode ahead of the assembly elections, amid a one-off game of humiliation between its two top leaders – Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. To decide who will be the Chief Minister in case the party comes to power.
There is also clear concern within the party about creating a virtual divide between the two leaders’ camps and reducing its chances in the elections.
