The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) of Indian Railways, which has 150 years old world heritage at its core, to rejuvenate Darjeeling’s tourism industry. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), DHR is organizing a month long festival called “Ghoom Utsav” at Ghoom (India’s highest railway station) and Darjeeling railway stations.

The festivities will begin on November 13 and end on December 05 (DHR Day); The day the DHR got UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. The aim of the festival is to attract the pandemic-weary population of the entire country and the world, to rank Darjeeling as a premium tourist destination and thereby boost the earnings of Indian Railways. DHR. DHR is running several toy-train rides such as Joyrides, Jungle-T Safari, New Jalpaiguri – Darjeeling Passenger Train and Red Panda.

Also, this festival will provide a great platform to the artists, artists, craftsmen, engineers and workers of the district as well as Indian Railways to showcase their creativity to the world and increase their earnings. Overall, this is a major step by the DHR towards the preservation of the local culture of the region and the justification of UNESCO World Heritage status.

The festival will run with 3 verticals, namely: Culture, Adventure and Tourism. The cultural aspect includes a number of events that will be held at the stations and folk dances, folk music, singing, music and dance performances such as the famous Chowrasta stage in Darjeeling. , stand-up comedy, drama and talent shows. To make this a reality, local artists as well as the in-house talents of Indian Railways are coming together. The cultural pillar will be a reflection of the enthusiastic mood of the tourists in this festival.

The adventurous aspect includes heritage walks, mountain biking and trackathon events held every day that are held on weekends and on specific days. Organizations like Darjeeling Walk, Vikrun Foundation, Mountain Biking Club of Darjeeling, Runners Club have partnered with DHR to host these events.

Local vendors/vendors and franchisees will be provided space at Darjeeling and Ghoom railway stations to display handicrafts, art works, clothing etc. and sell food items to tourists throughout the month.

The fest also provides an opportunity for DHR to establish its presence on social media including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc and collaborate with YouTube channels to promote the region and attract tourists from all over the world. Many organizations that are associated with the tourism industry are joining hands to make this festival a success – like Darjeeling Kalimpong Himalayan Tourism Association, Darjeeling Hotel Owners Association, Darjeeling Homestay Association, Darjeeling Hill Runners Association etc.
