‘Rare to Find a Happy Politician’: Did Gadkari Taunt Rajasthan Congress With ‘Greed For Power’?

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said it is rare to find a happy politician as most of them were insecure about power, which many see as a joke in the ruling Congress in Rajasthan. Gadkari, who commented lightly in Jaipur, did not mention any particular political party or leader, but his remarks were aimed at the power struggle between CM Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot in the state.

“The MLAs were unhappy because they could not become ministers; The minister was unhappy about not getting a good portfolio; Those who got a good portfolio were unhappy about not being able to become the Chief Minister. And the CM was unhappy as he was not sure how long he would be in office,” Gadkari said at the concluding session of a seminar organized by the Rajasthan branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

The minister quoted well-known satirist Sharad Joshi as saying that useless politicians in the states were sent to Delhi, those who were of no use in Delhi were made governors, while those who could not become governors were made ambassadors. “When I was the BJP president, I could not find anyone who was not sad. Once a journalist asked me how to be happy, I replied that those who do not worry about the future remain happy,” he said.

Gadkari said a Congress leader from Nagpur, who was his good friend, had once asked him to jump into Congress after Gadkari lost an election, when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not as strong as it is today. As reported by Hindustan Times, “I politely declined, as life has its ups and downs, but you must remain faithful to the ideology.”

BJP has recently seen a change in Gujarat where Bhupendra Patel made a shocking change to Vijay Rupani. Earlier, Pushkar Singh Dhami took over as the new CM of Uttarakhand after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned citing ‘constitutional constraints’. Rawat himself replaced Trivendra Singh Rawat in March 2021, ten days before the completion of four years of his government.

Similarly, Basavaraj Bommai took over from veteran Yeddyurappa in Karnataka as rebel MLAs of the JD(S) and Congress were inducted after massive protests by angry BJP leaders since the cabinet expansion in January. After the Assam election victory, the BJP chose Himanta Biswa Sarma as its choice, while the incumbent CM Sarbananda Sonowal was inducted into the Union Cabinet.

Meanwhile, the Congress is struggling to contain the insurgency in Punjab, where Navjot Singh Sidhu and Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh are involved in a war of words. There has been a tussle between Pilot and Gehlot in Rajasthan, with supporters of both the sides trying to put pressure on the top leadership. Chhattisgarh also saw some murmurs of discontent amid the fight between CM Bhupesh Baghel and TS Singh Deo.
