Record breaking sale of liquor on Holi in Delhi. more shocking facts inside

Are you still suffering from Holi hangover? Looks like there are many others like you who celebrated the festival of colors with great enthusiasm. If reports are to be believed, record breaking sale of liquor was witnessed in Delhi before Holi. Since, March 8, 2023 – the day of the festival – was declared a dry day, all liquor shops were closed. So people hoarded liquor in advance for the celebration. On March 6 alone, over 26 lakh bottles of liquor worth Rs 58.8 crore were sold in the capital!

This was disclosed and reported by the Excise Department times of India, The sales amount broke all previous year’s sales records, even on New Year’s Eve. In fact, the first week of March saw a huge increase in liquor sales in the run up to Holi. What started with sales of over 15 lakh bottles on 1st March, went up to 22 lakhs on 5th March and a staggering 26 lakhs on 6th March, breaking all records. It is being told that March 7 also saw a high sales volume of at least 20 lakh bottles.

Holi 2023 saw people going all out to celebrate.

Reportedly, the excise department earned Rs 6,100 crore from the sale, which includes Rs 5,000 crore from excise duty on liquor bottles and Rs 1,100 crore as Value Added Tax (VAT).

To sum it up, more than 1.13 crore liquor bottles worth Rs 238 crore were sold just before Holi.

The consumption of alcohol has increased manifold after the Covid-induced lockdown. Now that people are stepping out and meeting each other on special occasions, Holi celebration on a large scale was imminent. And we don’t blame the drinkers as Holi is synonymous with fun, food and drink. Beer, in particular, is popular on this day, and that is why most liquor shops have run out of major beer brands in the last few days before the festival.
