There is a dire need to recruit 500 more professors in colleges to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Himachal Pradesh, according to representatives of the hill state attending an academic conference in Kurukshetra, Haryana.

In a release issued here on Saturday, the office-bearers of the Himachal Pradesh Government College Teachers Association (HGCTA), which is participating in the 32nd Academic Conference organized by the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organization (AIFACTO), said. He said that out of 133 colleges in the state, about 100 are without regular principals, 50 colleges are functioning from private campuses and about 30 have only two or three professors.

The delegates from across the country at the conference expressed serious concern over the “assault” on higher education “from all corners”. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is issuing notices for conducting seminars on subjects that are “not close to reality and logic”.

The theme of the conference being held from March 17 to 19 is “75 Years of Independence: State of Higher Education in India”. More than 2,000 delegates from universities and colleges across the country are participating in the conference to deliberate on the issues and challenges faced by higher education in the context of implementation of NEP 2020.
