Now Verstappen is 6 points ahead at the World Championships
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen led the F1 world championship with a commanding victory in Barcelona, Spain as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc retired from the race with a power unit failure. He seemed to be leading the race for 29 laps. Ferrari’s troubles did not end there as its second car, Carlos Sainz Jr., initially lost position due to a stalled start and then turned into gravel. He was only able to recover P4 by the end of the race. This means that Ferrari has lost both the constructor’s championship lead as its driver has lost the driver’s championship lead.
Red Bull took advantage of Ferrari’s weaknesses as it took a 1-2 lead with Perez’s P2. For a large part of the race, Perez and Verstappen dueled with George Russell in a resurgent Mercedes. The Mercedes driver puts P3 ahead of Sainz’s Ferrari. Russell was again overtaken by his 7-time world champion teammate Lewis Hamilton, who recovered from a first lap incident with Kevin Magnussen to finish in P5. Some water leaks occurred in both Mercedes cars, which resulted in him overtaking Hamilton in the final round of the race.
Behind him was the brave Valtteri Bottas in P6 for Alfa Romeo, but unfortunately his teammate Guanyue Zhou did not finish the race. Ocon and Alonso brought the Alpine cars to good points in P7 and P9. They were separated at McLaren by Lando Norris, who managed P8 well ahead of his Australian teammate Ricciardo, who had just managed P12. Yuki Tsunoda surpassed his teammate Pierre Gasly in the top 10 for AlphaTauri, who managed P13.
Vettel managed P11 in the recently upgraded Aston Martin before Lance Stroll, who managed P15. Mick Schumacher looked good for his first point at one point in the race, but then reached just P15 for Haas. He was ahead of his teammate Magnussen, whose race was largely ruined by a first-lap collision with Hamilton. He managed P17 with Williams of Latifi leading him in P16 and Albon trailing in P18.
