The tableau of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs during the Republic Day Parade depicts the government’s efforts to provide quality education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students in remote tribal areas through Eklavya Model Residential Schools.

A girl on the obverse signified the equality of educational opportunities provided in residential schools. A globe in his hand symbolizes his desire to conquer the world with the power of knowledge.

An open book with a prototypical pen in the shape of Eklavya’s bow and arrow depicts the unwavering focus of students at Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS).

This shows that bow and arrow protected and empowered tribal people in the past, and now education is the means to empower them.

A knowledge tree at the rear of the tableau depicted the spread of knowledge and wisdom from teachers to tribal students, who come to EMRS from far flung areas. The tree also signifies the spirit of preservation of tribal culture and heritage.

EMRS are residential co-educational schools that provide upper primary, secondary and senior secondary level education to tribal students to bring them at par with the general population.

The government has decided to set up one EMRS in every block which has more than 50 per cent ST population and at least 20,000 tribal people (as per 2011 census).

Accordingly, the Ministry has set a target of setting up 740 EMRS across the country. Till date, a total of 689 EMRS have been sanctioned across the country and out of these, 394 are functional.
