Rubber plantation destroyed in Malappuram landslide

A rubber plantation was destroyed in a landslide on the Panthallur hills near Anakkayam in the district in the early hours of Friday. However, there were no casualties as people in the vicinity were evacuated safely.

The landslide occurred after 1 am on Friday following incessant rains in the area. Locals say they have been living in fear of landslides since granite quarrying threatened the hills a few years ago.

The excavation was stopped a few years ago after people protested and started an agitation under an Action Council.

Revenue officials said they were assessing the damage caused by Friday’s landslide. Several trees, including dozens of rubber trees, were felled by the landslide, which cut a wide muddy path across the Sylvan hill.
