Rupee rises 2 paise at 73.06 against US dollar

The local unit opened at 73.04 against the greenback and saw intra-day highs of 72.96 and low of 73.13.

The Indian rupee on Thursday closed marginally higher by 2 paise at 73.06 (provisional) against the US dollar, despite a sustained rally in domestic equities.

In the interbank forex market, the local unit opened at 73.04 against the greenback and saw intra-day highs of 72.96 and low of 73.13.

It finally ended at 73.06 against the US currency, registering a gain of just 2 paise over its previous close.

On Wednesday, the rupee had closed at 73.08 against the US dollar.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex closed at a lifetime high of 57,852.54, up 514.33 points or 0.90%, while the broader NSE Nifty rose 156.90 points or 0.92% to end at a record 17,233.15.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.06% to 92.39.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.32% to $71.82 a barrel.

Foreign institutional investors were net buyers in the capital markets on Wednesday as they bought shares worth Rs 666.66 crore, according to exchange data.
