Moscow: Most Russia A week of paid leave aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus ended on Monday, despite the country seeing thousands of new cases and over 1,000 deaths per day.
President Vladimir Putin Ordered a period of paid leave from October 30 to November 7 to curb rising infections and deaths from a slow vaccination campaign.
Individual regions had the right to extend the period but as of Monday only five had done so, including the western region of Bryansk and the Siberian region of Tomsk.
However, many regions introduced or expanded a requirement for proof of vaccination to visit restaurants, cafes and shopping centres.
Moscow, the epicenter of the epidemic in Russia, still does not require proof of vaccination for most public activities.
With more than 8.8 million cases recorded since the start of the pandemic, Russia is one of the world’s worst-hit countries and this autumn’s devastating wave pushed infections and deaths to new records.
On Monday, officials reported 39,400 new cases and 1,190 deaths in the last 24 hours.
The highest number for new infections – 41,335 – was recorded on Saturday, while the highest number of new deaths – 1,195 – were recorded last Thursday.
Russia has developed several domestic vaccines, including Sputnik V, but only a third of the population is fully vaccinated.
Officials have been accused of underreporting the pandemic and figures from the statistics agency rosstat In October, Kovid died almost twice as compared to the government tally.
Rosstat said 44,265 people died from the coronavirus in September – nearly double the official government figure – bringing the agency’s total virus toll to nearly 450,000, the highest in Europe.
