Russian military admits satellite ‘destroyed’ during test, confirms US allegations – Times of India

Moscow: RussiaThe US Defense Ministry on Tuesday admitted to destroying one of its satellites during a missile test, confirming earlier allegations. United States of america,
“Russian Defense Ministry successfully conducted a test, resulting in ‘Russian spacecraft’Selina-D‘, which had been in orbit since 1982, was destroyed,” the military said in a statement.
US officials on Monday condemned Russia for conducting a “dangerous and irresponsible” missile test that blew up one of its own satellites, leaving a cloud of debris threatening the International Space Station.
NASA The crew aboard the ISS – currently four Americans, one German and two Russians – were awakened and forced to take refuge in their return ships.
US officials said they had not been informed in advance about the anti-satellite missile test – only the fourth to hit a spacecraft from the ground – which produced more than 1,500 pieces of trackable orbital debris.
The Russian military said it was carrying out planned activities to strengthen its defense capabilities, but denied that the test was dangerous.
“The United States knows with certainty that the resulting fragments, in terms of test times and orbital parameters, will not and will not pose a threat to orbital stations, spacecraft, and space activities.”
The confirmation of the US claims came moments after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov rejected it.
“Declaring that the Russian Federation poses a risk to the peaceful use of space is the least amount of hypocrisy,” Lavrov told a news conference in Moscow. There are “no facts” behind the claims.
Russia’s move raised concerns about a growing arms race in space, which includes everything from laser weapons to satellites capable of pushing others out of orbit.
