Gaikwad played an unbeaten knock of 88 not out as CSK posted 24 for four inside the powerplay to score 156 for 6.

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming has heaped praise on young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, saying he absorbed the pressure and played a “remarkable” innings that gave the team a chance against defending champions Mumbai Indians in their IPL match here.

Gaikwad played an unbeaten knock of 88 not out as CSK posted 24 for four inside the powerplay to score 156 for six.

Fleming said, “Today was very special. ” press conference after the match

“So, the way he went about his work, there was really pressure in him and then the ability to move forward in the innings, it was really in his hands, that we were able to create any kind of pressure. So, it was a remarkable innings from his side.” Gaikwad opened the innings with an unbeaten 58-ball knock before Dwayne Bravo performed brilliantly to guide CSK to a 20-run win over Mumbai Indians in the IPL here on 19 September.

“It was very special, as you know, we’ve had huge taps on that [Ruturaj] For some time. The last time we were here, we took him back, probably too quickly given the shape he was from COVID, but how much respect and respect we have for his ability.

“But the way he finished the IPL in Dubai last year prepared him for the first part in India,” said the former New Zealand captain.

Batsman Ambati Rayudu retired hurt after a blow to his body, while pacer Deepak Chahar suffered a convulsion while bowling.

Giving an update on his fitness, the head coach said: “Rayudu was X-ray clear. So, it was just a bad injury on the stage and he lost a little bit of power on his grip. So, yes, we were up in fear. Was that it could be broken, but the good news is it isn’t.

“And Deepak Chahar was tight-lipped and will check it tomorrow. So hopefully fingers crossed, they both come in due course, all right.” In the game against Mumbai Indians, CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni came to bat ahead of Ravindra Jadeja and Fleming said that the call was taken based on the situation of the match.

“it is enough [based on the] Situation. In India we had a really good start and we saw a combination of left and right hands. So, we are reaching the end of the innings.”

“It was very different when the captain called today. We weren’t in this position for a while, if at all.

“So, the captain wanted the responsibility and it was right, so it was a good call but it’s very situational and there’s just a little bit of experience in match conditions, with a left-hander or MS. So, it’s those Good to have options.”
