Salima Tete honored with AHF Emerging Woman Player of the Year Award

Salima Tete was awarded the AHF Emerging Player of the Year award for her incredible performance for the Indian hockey team

Indian women’s hockey team midfielder Salima Tete has been awarded the AHF Emerging Player of the Year Award for her stellar performance in 2022.

The award was presented to the 20-year-old at the Annual General Meeting of the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) in Mungyeong, Korea.

“I would like to thank the Asian Hockey Federation for recognizing the hard work I have put in on the ground over the years,” Salima said in a statement released by Hockey India.

“But this journey would not have been possible without the constant support from my teammates and coaching staff, who have always given me the confidence to play to my strengths and the freedom to express myself.”

The Asian Hockey Federation also honored Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh with the Emerging Sport Leader Award.

Salima has been an integral part of the Indian team over the years and was named as the emerging player of the tournament at the Women’s Asia Cup in Muscat last year.

She made her senior team debut in 2016 in a Test series against Australia, before helping the national junior team win a silver medal at the 3rd Youth Olympic Games in 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Salima was also part of the Indian team that finished a creditable fourth in the Tokyo Olympics. She also played at the 2021 FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup in Potchefstroom, South Africa, where the team finished fourth.

Besides this, the midfielder was part of the Indian team that finished third in the FIH Women’s Hockey Pro League 2021/22 and the bronze medal-winning squad at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey congratulated the young midfielder for the award.

“I congratulate Salima Tete for being honored with this award. It always makes me very happy to see our Indian sportspersons get the recognition they deserve on the global platform.

“Despite being one of the youngest members of the team, he has been an asset to the Indian team over the years. We are confident that she will fly even higher in the years to come.”
