Sankashti Chaturthi: Lord Ganesha is worshiped every month on Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha. This day is known as Sakashti Chaturthi.

Auspicious Sankashti Chaturthi: Some devotees observe a strict fast on this day while others observe a partial fast. Lord Ganesha is worshiped by followers of Hinduism as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Lord Ganesha is known as Vighnaharta, the remover of all obstacles. Hence, he is worshiped before any new beginning or the launch of any new venture or business. Lord Ganesha is worshiped every month on Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha. This day is known as Sakashti Chaturthi.

It is believed that worshiping Lord Ganesha on this day brings happiness, success and prosperity in life. Some devotees observe a strict fast on this day while others observe a partial fast. Foods like fruits and vegetables can be eaten during the fast. The Sanskrit word ‘Sankashti’ means liberation from sorrows, so worshiping Lord Ganesha on this day removes all problems from the life of the devotees and bestows them with prosperity.

Sankashti Chaturthi: Auspicious time

According to the Panchang, this month Sankashti Chaturthi is falling on 9th February, Thursday. Chaturthi Tithi will start at 06.23 am on February 9 and end at 7.58 am on February 10.

Sankashti Chaturthi: Worship method

  1. Devotees wake up early in the morning and take bath. They keep partial or one day fast on this day. They eat only fruits and vegetables for the whole day. To end the fast, you can eat khichdi made of groundnut, potato and sago.
  2. The main worship of Sankashti Chaturthi is done only after the moon is sighted in the evening. Lord Ganesha is worshiped with Durva and fresh flowers. A lamp is lit in front of the idol. Devotees recite the Vrat Katha in front of the Ganesha idol. The fast is broken after the rituals are over.
  3. Naivedya consisting of Modak and other favorite food of Lord Ganesha is prepared as Prasad on the occasion. These sweets are distributed as Prasad after the Aarti.
  4. Devotees can also offer fried potatoes, curd, fruits and rice pudding.
  5. It is considered auspicious to recite Ganesha Ashtottara and Sankastanashan Stotram on this day.

Sankashti Chaturthi: Significance

Worshiping Lord Ganesha on this day and observing a fast for the deity bestows the devotees with knowledge, good health, wealth and happiness. Worshiping him and having faith in him will help in removing all obstacles. Devotees started celebrating this day with the belief that their God would help them overcome bad times and bless them with wisdom and wealth.

According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Lord Ganesha is the manifestation of self-consciousness and wisdom. That’s why by worshiping him, the devotees get wisdom.
