Sardar Singh named coach of India ‘A’ men’s hockey team for Commonwealth Games, Deepak Thakur to guide women’s side

Former captain Sardar Singh and former striker Deepak Thakur were on Saturday named as the coaches of the Indian men’s and women’s ‘A’ hockey teams, which will participate in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In a surprise development, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist pair of Rupinder Pal Singh and Birender Lakra along with veteran forward SV Sunil also returned from retirement as they were named among men’s 330 million prospects for the Birmingham CWG squad selection. . All three had retired from the sport immediately after the Tokyo Olympics last year.

The Indian men’s and women’s ‘A’ teams will take part in this year’s Commonwealth Games, as Hockey India has decided not to send the main squads for the multi-sport event due to the short turnaround between the Commonwealth Games and the Hangzhou Asian Games. One is the qualifying tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

There is a gap of just 32 days between the two events and the national federation wants to keep its players fresh for the Asian Games.

The development came after a meeting chaired by Sports Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi on February 15, in which the preparation of the Indian contingent for the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2022 Asian Games in eight high priority subjects was discussed by the National Sports Federations and the Sports Authority of India. Went.

The national federation on Saturday also announced a list of 33-33 players for the India ‘A’ men’s and women’s core probables group.

Both the teams will start the national camp from March 7 at the SAI Center in Bengaluru.

“The selection of this group of 33 players for India ‘A’ women’s and men’s core group is a positive development aimed at expanding the talent pool for selection of respective men’s and women’s national teams.

“We are really happy to have stalwarts like Deepak Thakur and Sardar Singh join the national coaching programme. The wealth of experience, technical know-how and world class ability that they both bring to the table will be immensely beneficial to this group of players, which in turn will strengthen Indian hockey manifold,” HI President Gyanandro Ningombam said in a statement. .

Surprisingly, on the list of main probables named in the men’s camp were Rupinder and Lakra – both members of the Olympic bronze medal-winning team – and Sunil. Experienced forward Ramandeep Singh is also eligible for selection after being included in the list of core probables.
