Schools in Odisha reopened for Class 8 students on Monday following the COVID-19 protocol. According to a notification issued by the Department of School and Mass Education, both government and private schools have reopened for class 8 students and classes were conducted between 9 am and 12.30 pm. Class teaching for class 10 and 12 started on 26 July and classes for class 11 students started on 21 October.

While the online option will continue, students can attend offline classes in consultation with their parents. Due to the onset of the pandemic, classroom teaching was suspended since March last year. Since then students have studied online. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) emphasized the need to maintain social distancing and queue management inside the school premises and at the entrance, apart from marking on the floor or the ground at an interval of six feet.

It also said that the students should be allotted seats inside the classrooms at a safe distance from each other and fixed seating arrangements should be made. A special seat should be earmarked for each student. Referring to the mid-day meal provided in government schools, the SOP said that dry food would be provided to the students instead of cooked food in the school. It has been said in the notification that special examination will be held on October 27, 28 and 29 and efforts will be made to create a fear-free environment in the school.

School authorities have been asked to make adequate arrangements for soap and running water in the washrooms. Hand sanitizer should be available for teachers, students and staff in every classroom.
