Sensex climbs 651 points; Nifty reclaims 18,000 level

BSE Sensex surged over 650 points to cross 60,000 level, while NSE Nifty closed above 18,000 on Monday as participants showed keen interest in IT and financial stocks ahead of third quarter earnings season.

Starting on a positive note, the 30-share BSE benchmark soared as high as 60,427.36, up 650.98 points or 1.09 per cent, before ending at 60,395.63.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty climbed 190.60 points or 1.07 per cent to end at 18,003.30. On the Sensex chart, Titan, Maruti, SBI, L&T, HDFC and Kotak Bank emerged as major gainers. In contrast, Wipro, Nestle India, Asian Paints and PowerGrid were among the major laggards.

Analysts said the announcement of third quarter corporate results by IT majors and HDFC Bank, beginning this week, is likely to set trends for key tech and banking sectors. Elsewhere in Asia, investors awaited US inflation data, which ended on a weak note.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in the capital market as they bought shares worth Rs 496.27 crore on Friday, according to stock exchange data.
