Share Market Update: Sensex down 100 points, Nifty opens below 18,200; Zomato Falls 3%

Sensex Today: The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 indices opened on a cautious note on Tuesday after opening the first trading week of the year with sharp losses in Asia-Pacific markets. The S&P BSE Sensex closed 94 points, or 0.15 per cent, lower at 61,074, while the Nifty 50 was below the 18,200-mark.

Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, IndusInd Bank, SBI, Tata Motors, UPL, PowerGrid and HDFC Life were the top gainers in the Nifty 50 as they rose up to 0.6 per cent. On the flipside, Britannia, Reliance Industries, Hindalco, Hero MotoCorp, HUL, SBI Life and HCL Tech, which fell in the range of 0.4 per cent to 0.6 per cent, weighed on the index.

In the broader markets, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices outperformed the mainstream indices with gains of up to 0.3 per cent each.

Besides, in key regional trends, smelly PSU Bank index (up 0.7 per cent) was the best performing index in today’s trade, while Nifty Pharma index declined the most, down 0.25 per cent.

Individually, Reliance Industries, ONGC and oil stocks India Each fell 0.5 per cent after the government raised the windfall tax on crude oil from Rs 1,700 to Rs 2,100 a tonne with effect from January 3. Export tax on diesel increased to Rs 7.5 per litre.

Besides, Zomato shares declined 2.5 per cent after its co-founder and chief technology officer Gunjan Patidar quit the food aggregator platform.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.64 percent in its first trading session for 2023, while South Korea’s Kospi fell 1.9 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index slid 1.15 percent, while the Shanghai Composite in mainland China fell 0.44 percent. Markets in Japan and New Zealand are closed on Tuesday for a public holiday.
