Shubman Gill is in the same league as Rohit Sharma and Dhawan, says Scott Styris

Young Indian opener Shubman Gill opened the innings with both hands in the three-match series against West Indies in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Gill was adjudged the Player of the Series as India scored 205 runs in three matches to beat the Windies 3-0.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris named Shubman Gill as the opening batsman in the league of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan. “You are always learning, even till the end Tendulkar was still learning about his craft and he played, what was it? 200 test matches. So, you know, I guess, you would never label a youngster like Shubman Gill as a complete player,” Styris said exclusively on SPORTS18’s daily sports news show ‘SPORTS OVER The TOP’.

“I still think there are some flaws in his game. I think there are some flaws in his technique that the opposition will try to exploit, but he has all the skills and other components. What makes a world class player is his mental thought process and his maturity and leadership. And I think he has the same. And for that reason, yes you are absolutely right you can put him there along with Rohit, KL Rahul and Shikhar in terms of openers,” Styris said.

Gill hit a career-best 98 not out in the third and final ODI against West Indies on Wednesday (July 27) as India beat the hosts by 119 runs (D/L method). He was unlucky not to score his maiden ODI century due to rain interruption in the match.

Former India selector Saba Karimi He also shared his views on whether Gill could potentially lead the way at the international level. “I think it’s good to get some kind of experience. And I think in a year, two years or so around we can see Shubman leading one of these in the India T20 league. And I think is that once he gets that kind of experience, he can manage to lead Punjab at the domestic level which will be really good for him. So, he will gain experience and as you rightly said, he has acquired some leadership skills So that it will be really good for Shubman Gill in future,” Karim said on the show.

“I see him as a versatile player because at this level, one has seen him bat so well for India as an opener. But given the opportunity, I am sure he can do well at number three, number four and I think in most T20 formats, you see players who bat at number one, number two and number three. can do. So, I think Shubman Gill can fit into that kind of mold quite easily,” Karim said of Gill’s versatility.
