Saurav Ghosal on Wednesday created history by winning India’s first singles medal in squash at the Commonwealth Games. The world number 15 achieved the feat after beating England’s James Willstrop 11-6, 11-1, 11-4 in a bronze playoff match. Ghosal was earlier defeated by New Zealand’s Paul Cole in the men’s singles semi-final on Tuesday. While India wrote history with Ghoshal’s bronze medal, it was the player’s second medal in the history of the event. She won mixed doubles silver along with Dipika Pallikal in the 2018 edition held in Gold Coast, Australia.
Ghosal had tears in his eyes soon after his victory on Wednesday. The player started crying while the crowd behind him kept applauding him.

“I am very happy, it is a historic day for Indian squash. To be able to do this against a player of this ability is very special. I am happy that after all these years I am able to win it.” Ghoshal said.
He said, “It was this one – a CWG singles medal – that was missing from my collection and I have played the first three Commonwealth Games and to be able to go ahead on my fourth attempt is even more special. I had to wait for so long ” ,
The 35-year-old Ghosal took the first game comfortably against home favorite Willstrop and dominated the second game by a huge margin, keeping himself within striking distance of scripting history.
