Security beefed up around Sri Lankan parliament ahead of presidential election

Security was beefed up in and around Sri Lanka’s Parliament complex on Tuesday after the Speaker filed a complaint with the Inspector General of Police demanding a detailed inquiry into some provocative posts published on social media threatening Members of Parliament.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhayawardene’s complaint came hours before parliament was set to accept nominations for the presidency, which was vacated last week after Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country and later resigned.

Sri Lankan lawmakers from the ruling party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on Monday complained of receiving threatening messages on social media warning them against voting for Sri Lanka’s acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe. As a result, the police and the country’s armed forces have been deployed in and around the Parliament complex on Tuesday.

Police have warned that strict action will be taken against those who create, publish and circulate such threatening posts against MPs on social media.
