Colombo: Sri Lankan police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse anti-government protesters here on Saturday, as the ongoing agitation demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa over the worst economic crisis is in its 50th. Intensified as the day entered. Sri Lanka is close to bankruptcy and there is a severe shortage of essentials ranging from food, fuel, medicines and cooking gas to toilet paper and match sticks. People have been standing in long queues for months to buy limited stocks.
Sri Lanka’s economic crisis has sparked political unrest over the past 49 days with protests at the entrance of the presidential office demanding his resignation. The crisis has already forced the president’s older brother, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, to resign on 9 May.
There has also been a strong call for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign, although he has refused to do so.
Saturday marks the 50th day of the “Go Rajapakse” protest, which also resulted in the death of an MP. The Sri Lankan police have used force on several occasions to control the unrest.
“The continuous protest demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has reached its 50th day today. The day is to be marked with a protest march with wide participation,” the organizers said.
News website newsfirst.Lk reported that police fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse protesters near the World Trade Center in Fort, Colombo.
According to Colombo Gazette newspaper, a protest was held near Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s residence and office to disrupt traffic on Flower Road. The protest was organized by “No Deal Gama”, it said.
Sharing a video of the protest, in which agitators were seen carrying black flags and raising anti-government slogans, the Daily Mirror newspaper tweeted, “50 days of Galle Face Struggle – Public representatives and several civic activists from Kollupitiya Junction to Galle Face Let’s march.”
Protests against the government began on 9 April when agitators moved into Galle Face Promenade central Colombo and blocked the entrance to Rajapaksa’s presidential office.
He expanded the activities at the site by naming it GGG ‘Gota Go Gama (Village)’. A reference library, a theatre, a political platform with cultural and religious programs have been set up at the protest site.
Volunteers delivered on-site food and drink, with the participation increasing in number with each passing day.
The chorus for Rajapaksa’s resignation gathered momentum as people gripped by the ongoing deteriorating economic conditions – long queues at fuel pumps and cooking gas shops, shortages of essential commodities, slowdown in businesses, extended hours of power cuts.
The participants expressed apprehension of action on the protests on some occasions. But support from the legal community saw officials restrain themselves against physically attacking the site for fear of facing allegations of abuse of rights.
However, on 9 May, a group of government supporters attacked the site, injuring protesters. A backlash came after the country was forced into an island-wide curfew. At least 10 people died in this violence. Properties of some 78 ruling party politicians were attacked or set on fire.
The same evening, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned and was replaced by an opposition politician, Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Mahinda Rajapakse, his son Namal and several seniors are still being questioned about the violence. At least two ruling lawmakers have been remanded for their responsibility for attacking peaceful protesters.
Meanwhile, police said they had obtained a court order preventing protesters from entering some major roads in the Fort area of central Colombo.
“Our struggle will end only when the Rajapaksa family leaves the political arena and will be presented in the people’s court for all the wrongs they have done,” said Chamira Jeevanta, a protester who has been at the scene for 50 days.
