Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan opposition seeks no-confidence motion on Rajapaksa – Times of India

To oust Rajapaksa and the cabinet would require a majority in the 225-member parliament. A decision on when the no-confidence motion will be held is expected to be taken after the meeting of Members of Parliament begins on Wednesday.
The United People’s Force also moved a no-confidence motion targeting the president, but it would not force him to step down, even if a majority of lawmakers vote against him.
Sri Lanka is on the verge of bankruptcy following the country’s recent announcement to suspend payments on its foreign debts. The country has to repay foreign debt of US $ 7 billion by 2026 this year, which is to be paid by 2026. Sri Lanka has foreign reserves of less than US$ 1 billion.
