Sri Lankan President thanks India for ‘timely assistance’ – Times of India

As he called for an all-party government to tackle the economic crisis Sri Lanka facing, president Ranil Wickremesinghe On Wednesday, he thanked PM Modi for providing the island nation with a “breath of life” by giving timely financial assistance. “I would like to make a special mention of the assistance provided by our nearest neighbor India in our efforts for economic revival,” he said.
“The Government of India under the leadership of PM Modi has given us the breath of life. On behalf of my people and myself, I express my gratitude to PM Modi, the government and the people of India,” he said.
Modi had earlier written to the President that India would support the Sri Lankan people’s quest for stability and economic recovery of the island nation “by established democratic means”. Wickremesinghe, regarded by many as a friend of India, made the remarks while addressing a formal meeting of Parliament. He said the opposition to foreign investment projects has affected Sri Lanka’s economy.
“When we tried develop oil tank complex at Trincomalee with India, it was Having said that it would be sold to India, and the project was put on hold. If at that time we were allowed to develop the oil tank complex, today people would not have to queue for fuel,” he said.
