Sugar production will increase in the next season

The domestic consumption of sugar is estimated to be around 275 lakh tonnes, with around 80 lakh tonnes of surplus sugar in the 2022-2023 sugar season which can be exported, said ISMA

According to the estimates of the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the production of sugar during the next season (October 2022 to September 2023) is expected to be around five lakh tonnes more than the current season.

The area under sugarcane has increased by 4 per cent this year. The association said in a press statement that it is expected to increase the production of sugar in the next season to 399.97 lakh tonnes (before diversion to ethanol), as against the production of 394 lakh tonnes in this sugar season.

In the current season till July 10, around 34 lakh tonnes of sugar was diverted for ethanol. Ethanol blending is expected to be 12% in 2022-2023 and hence, around 545 crore liters of ethanol would be required. It is estimated that about 4.5 million tonnes of ethanol will be sent for the next sugar season.
