T20 World Cup: Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan resigns from role

In a shocking decision, Rashid Khan on Thursday resigned as the captain Afghanistan teamHe said that his opinion was not sought before finalizing the national team for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Earlier in the day, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) named Rashid as the captain, while veteran wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad was also included in the 15-man squad for the showpiece event starting next month. “As the captain and the person responsible for the country, I reserve the right to be a part of the team’s selection,” the 22-year-old spinner said in a post shared on his Twitter handle.

“The selection committee and ACB have not taken my consent for the team announced by ACB media.

“I am taking the decision to step down as captain of the Afghanistan T20 team with immediate effect. It has always been a matter of pride for me to play for Afghanistan.”

Afghanistan has been in turmoil since the Taliban took over the country.

The star leg-spinner was named as the T20 captain keeping the World Cup in mind in July. Cricket Australia (CA) on Thursday It made it clear that it will not host the Afghanistan men’s team next month if women are not allowed to play the sport under the Taliban regime.

The T20 World Cup is to be held in the UAE from October 17 to November 14.

Afghanistan have been clubbed with India, New Zealand and Pakistan in Group 2 of the Super 12 stage. These four teams will be tied with two qualifiers from the first round, the other six teams will be placed in Group 1 of the stage.
