Tamil Nadu allows Jallikattu with strict covid precautions

A government order said, “Spectators must produce a thorough vaccination certificate.”

Chennai:

The Tamil Nadu government on Monday allowed the conduct of Jallikattu, a popular traditional bull-taming sport, in the state during the Pongal festival with stringent COVID-19 safety norms.

The government has made it mandatory for bull owners and their helpers, who register their animals for sport, to submit thorough vaccination certificates in addition to RT-PCR test negative reports. A government order passed on Monday said that they would be provided with identity cards to participate in the programme.

The GO said, “Only the bull owner and his trainer will be allowed during the registration. Only those with valid identity cards provided by the district administration will be allowed inside the arena.” Like last year, for Jallikattu 2022 too, the government capped spectators in open spaces to 150 or 50 per cent of the seating capacity (whichever is less).

“The spectators should produce a thorough vaccination against COVID-19 certificate and RT-PCR negative report two days before the event,” the government order said. Strict social distancing norms will be enforced.

It further directed the organizers and participants to avoid harming the bulls participating in Jallikattu.

“Due to COVID-19, only 300 tamers will be allowed to participate in Jallikattu, Manjuveerattu and Vadamadu,” it said.
