Tata Motors, Tata Power to set up 7 MWp solar rooftop expansion project in Pune

This is the third phase of a joint 17 MWp on-site solar project developed by the two firms, of which 10 MWp was installed earlier.

Tata Motors and Tata Power have joined hands to develop a 7 MW solar rooftop project at Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle plant in Chikhali, Pune. This is the third phase of a joint 17 MWp on-site solar project developed by the two firms, of which 10 MWp was installed earlier. Tata Motors PV manufacturing unit has become India’s largest on-site solar project with this latest installation. Tata Motors generated 92.39 million kWh of renewable electricity in FY22, which is about 19.4 per cent of the total power usage. The company also plans to approach renewable energy with greater vigor to reach its goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Rajesh Khatri, VP Operations, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, said, “Tata Motors is working towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the net zero emission target. With a new agreement to set up an additional 7 MW roof top solar plant at our Pune plant in collaboration with Tata Power, we will move closer to our goal of 100% renewable energy. Once this capability is commissioned, we will become the largest onsite solar installation in India.

Tata Motors and Tata Power recently entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for this solar project, which is an important step towards building a sustainable future. The installation is expected to collectively generate 23 million units of electricity, reducing 5.23 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide which is equivalent to planting 8.36 lakh trees in a lifetime.

Over the years, Tata Power has executed a number of large solar rooftop solutions including one of the world’s largest roof-top (16MW) in one location at Radhasoami Satsang Beas in Amritsar; 2.67MW roof-top solution at Cochin International Airport; Also the Cricket Club of India (CCI) has a solution of 820.8 kWp capacity, which makes it the largest solar powered cricket stadium in the world.

The firm has also installed a solar vertical farm (120kW) at Dell Technologies in Bangalore and 1.4MW of floating solar at Tata Chemicals, Nellore. Additionally, Tata Power is running a comprehensive pan-India residential rooftop program to make people aware of the benefits of saving through solar energy.
