Teacher arrested for kicking Dalit boy in class

The student suffered injuries on his thighs and was admitted to Raja Muttiah Medical College and Hospital in Chidambaram.

The Chidambaram city police have arrested a teacher from the nearby Nandanar Government Boys Higher Secondary School here for lashing and kicking a Class XII student of the Dalit community.

Though the incident took place on Wednesday, it came to light on Thursday night when a video of the incident, shot by some students in the classroom, went viral on social media.

According to the police, the headmaster of the school, Guganathan, was circling on Wednesday when he was found by a student not attending classes. He took the 17-year-old student to the class and complained to the physics teacher Subramaniam. The teacher questioned the student and allegedly thrashed him with a cane. As the teacher grabbed the student’s hair and started thrashing him, some students took out their mobile phones and made a video of the incident.

The student suffered injuries on his thighs and was admitted to Raja Muttiah Medical College and Hospital (RMMCH) in Chidambaram. Based on the student’s complaint, the police have registered a case against the teacher under sections 294 (b) (uttering obscenity), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), sections 294 (b). 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act read with the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 2016.

The teacher has been arrested and sent to judicial custody.
