US electric car maker Tesla, which is seeking a reduction in import duties to sell its vehicles in India, will not manufacture its products locally unless it is allowed to sell and service its cars in the country. Elon Musk, the company’s founder and chief executive, has said. ,

In a tweet when asked by a user about setting up a manufacturing plant in India, he said, “Tesla will not set up a manufacturing plant at any place where we are not allowed to sell and service cars before.”

Last month, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had said there is no problem if Tesla is ready to manufacture its electric vehicles in India, but the company should not import cars from China.

In August last year, Mr Musk had said that if Tesla is the first to succeed with imported vehicles in the country it may set up a manufacturing unit in India.

He said that Tesla wants to launch its vehicles in India “but the import duty is the highest of any major country in the world!”

Currently, India imposes 60% import duty on fully imported cars with CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) value above USD 40,000 and cars costing less than the amount.
