‘…that’s the main reason why this game went away’: Dinesh Karthik analyzes the reason behind India’s 1-wicket defeat

The game marked the return of all the big players including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul who were rested after the T20s. World Cup in Australia. But almost full strength were easily dominated by Bangladesh’s strong attack with former skipper Shakib Al Hasan taking five wickets. It was KL Rahul’s 70-ball 73 that helped India post 186 on the board.

In reply, the hosts also got off to a troubled start as they lost Najmul Shanto on the very first ball of their chase. Bangladesh’s wickets kept falling at regular intervals and it was looking like an easy win for India until an unbeaten 51-run partnership between Mehidy Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman changed Bangladesh’s fortunes.

Veteran India wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik feels India didn’t lose the game because of his bowling but the batting let him down.

He said, ‘We have not lost the match because of bowling. I think the thing that let him down the most was his batting. I think the bowlers did a fantastic job getting those nine wickets until things took a turn after that,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.

“He didn’t bat in the last eight overs, didn’t string those partnerships together. This was the main reason that the game went away from India.

According to Karthik, such games will help India prepare well for the 2023 World Cup at home. He said India might have lost 1scheduled tribe ODIs but this will give them an idea to find their middle order.

He said, ‘Team India needs matches like this. Pressure is needed to progress in the game, and that is what is going to help Team India in October and November. India maybe losing a game, but you want to be able to cope with the pressure no matter what the team, and that’s where they keep getting better,” Karthik added.

India will return to Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Wednesday for bothRa ODI.
