Toyota: Toyota’s Creta rival likely to debut on July 1: Could be called higher – Times of India

Toyota India is all set to unveil its new midsize SUV (codename: D22) in India on July 1, 2022. This new SUV is jointly developed by Suzuki in India and will also be a variant of Maruti Suzuki (codename YFG) which will see the light of day after a while.
The automaker has sent out a ‘Block Your Date’ invite to the media promising a “big announcement” on July 1, 2022, and we think this is likely to be for the unveiling of the new mid-size SUV. According to various reports, this new mid-size SUV is expected to be called Toyota Hyryder, but the company is yet to officially confirm the name.
As mentioned earlier, this new SUV is jointly developed by Suzuki and Toyota as part of their global partnership. The two new upcoming SUVs in India will be based on a new architecture that is based on the modular DNGA platform sourced from Daihatsu. The DNGA platform is specifically designed for emerging markets and is used for many Toyota and Daihatsu vehicles in international markets.
The upcoming mid-size SUV from Toyota and Suzuki has been spotted testing several times on Indian roads. The main attraction of this SUV is the hybrid engine. Both the SUVs are expected to be powered by Maruti’s 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with minor tuning. This engine will be mated to an electric motor which further improves the performance and efficiency.
The 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that is likely to be used is already powering various Maruti and Toyota models such as Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, S-Cross and Toyota Urban Cruiser. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic.
The new Toyota Hyder will take on established players in the segment like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushak and VW Taigun. The SUV is expected to feature premium appeal and connected car tech, 360-degree cameras, ventilated front seats, heads-up display, electrically adjustable driver seat, touchscreen infotainment system, sunroof and many more.
When launched, the new mid-size SUV competes with the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and MG Astor. We expect the new SUV to be priced between Rs 10-18 lakh (ex-showroom).
The new mid-size SUV will be manufactured at Toyota’s second manufacturing facility in Bidadi, Karnataka.
