Traffic disrupted due to falling of trees at five places in Nilgiris

Heavy rain and wind continued to lash most parts of the Nilgiris on Tuesday, uprooting trees and blocking roads in five different areas.

According to officials, an average of 11.81 mm of rain was recorded across the district between Monday and Tuesday morning, with heavy rainfall in Udhagamandalam, Kundah, Avalanche, Panna, Kinnakorei, Coonoor and Kotagiri.

Between Monday night and Tuesday morning, trees were uprooted and the road from Udhagamandalam to Kaikatti, which connects Udhagamandalam to Manzoor and Kundah, was blocked. There were also reports of fallen trees on the Doddabetta to Kattabettu road and the road leading to Iduhatti.

Traffic was blocked for a few hours before highway department staff removed them and traffic resumed on the roads.

Holiday has been declared in schools across the district due to rain and wind. However, colleges were allowed to function.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway services continued to run between Udhagamandalam and Coonoor. Officials of the Salem division of Southern Railway said services from Mettupalayam were suspended a few weeks ago due to frequent landslides and falling trees, and added that services from Mettupalayam to Coonoor would be suspended until further notice.

State Forest Minister K. Ramachandran visited some of the worst-hit areas on Tuesday.
