TRAI chief Vaghela eyes reduction in compliance burden on broadcasters

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman PD Vaghela on May 3 said that ideally there should be “full tolerance” in regulating broadcasting tariffs. Broadcasters and satellite TV operators are demanding tolerance, and local cable operators (LCOs) and multi-system operators (MSOs) are demanding regulations on the subscription prices they charge by channels.

“Whether we like it or not, LCOs have a problem, and they have to be protected,” said Dr. Vaghela, referring to cable operators losing customers. “It’s a transition phase where we have to take care of them.” Dr. Vaghela was speaking at the FICCI Frames 2023 Media & Entertainment Industry event in Mumbai along with Harit Nagpal, CEO, Tata Play. Tata Play last month complained in a letter to TRAI about slashing broadband prices, including free live-streaming channels affecting satellite TV and cable business.

relax the rules

“Should regulation and fee depend on the technology used rather than the product being delivered,” Mr Nagpal said, pointing to growing concern among the television distribution industry about cheap broadband and free live-streamed channels at home. reducing them without facing the same. regulatory scrutiny.

“Let us be clear: should we go for regulation for new players,” Dr Vaghela asked. “I would scoff at the idea. I would not like to see new players be regulated. Existing players can be given some kind of relief. Dr. Vaghela said that the relaxation for broadcasters was necessary, and that a consultation would soon come out on the subject of concerns faced by LCOs and MSOs.
