In the recently concluded elections, the BJP won 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, while its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), won one seat.

A senior party leader said that the newly elected BJP MLAs will hold a meeting on Monday at the party office here at Col Chowmuhani to elect the chief minister.

In the recently concluded elections, the BJP won 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, while its ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), won one seat.

“The newly elected members of the party will hold a meeting at the party’s election office on Monday to elect the leader of the BJP legislators. The party’s Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra will also attend the meeting,” party media in-charge Suneet Sarka told PTI.

However, he declined to comment on who could be the leader, who would also be the chief minister of the state. Speculations are rife that Manik Saha, who has already tendered his resignation, is likely to be the next chief minister of the second BJP-IPFT government considering his performance within the short span of running the state.

“He is an educated, gentleman and a person with a clean image. I hope that no other name will come in his place in the meeting”, said one of the party’s vice-presidents.

“Saha took charge in difficult times and led the party to a significant victory in the elections. He deserves to be the next chief minister”, he said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Darma has already visited the north eastern state to measure the waters and has held meetings with the chief minister and senior party colleagues on the possible formation of the next cabinet.

Party sources said Sarma held a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Sunday on the composition of the cabinet and its leader to ensure a smooth transition.

Sources claimed that the Union Home Minister is likely to visit the state on Tuesday to finalize the cabinet. The second BJP-led government will take oath on March 8 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP national president JP Nadda and several chief ministers of BJP-ruled states are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
