Two private helicopter operators fined by commercial tax department in Madurai

Officials of the Commercial Taxes Department (Enforcement Wing) here on Monday imposed a fine of ₹4.25 lakh on two helicopter operators on charges of tax evasion.

Both companies had been flying the general public in their helicopters as a “joy ride” for some time now. They were reportedly collecting ₹5000 per person for the ride. However, it turned out that the operators did not comply with the mandatory tax compliance of the governments. They had neither registered with the authority nor obtained license to operate nor remitted GST. Officials said Anand’s ride was being run as a business with the aim of making profits.

A team led by Joint Commissioner (Enforcement) Indra on Saturday interrogated the two operators and found that they had not paid mandatory taxes to the government. Therefore, under the charges of tax evasion, he was fined ₹4.25 lakh, said a press release issued here on Monday.

A senior official said they are in the process of collecting fines and warned of strict action against firms and companies if they are found to be violating the laws.
