The counting of votes for the by-elections to Rampur and Azamgarh Lok Sabha seats will begin at 8 am on Sunday, a senior official said. The bypolls were held on June 23, in which 49.43 per cent voter turnout was recorded in Azamgarh and 41.39 per cent in Rampur. A senior official posted as the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of UP told PTI that the counting of votes will begin at 8 am on Sunday. By-election had to be held due to the resignation of the Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and party leader Aajam Khan from Azamgarh and Rampur seats respectively. Both the leaders quit as Lok Sabha MPs after being elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in the elections held earlier this year.

Over 35 lakh people were eligible to vote in the by-elections to decide the fate of 19 candidates. From Rampur, BJP has fielded Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi, who recently joined the party. Asim Raja, chosen by Azam Khan, is the SP candidate. Mayawati-led BSP is not contesting from Rampur. Azamgarh seat saw a triangular contest between Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirhua’ of BJP, Bhojpuri actor-singer Dharmendra Yadav of SP and Shah Alam of BSP, also known as Guddu Jamali.

Samajwadi Party’s Rampur candidate had demanded fair counting of votes on Friday. Asim Raja had told reporters in Rampur, ‘Counting of votes should be fair and round-the-clock announcement of counting should be done.
