UP: Sedition case filed against Kashmiri students who raised pro-Pak slogans, sent to 14-day judicial custody

Three Kashmiri students, who were arrested for raising pro-Pakistan slogans in Agra, were booked for sedition on Thursday, Uttar Pradesh Police officials said. Officials said three students, two in their 20s and one 21, were also sent to 14-day judicial custody by an Agra court.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said earlier in the day that sedition law would be invoked against those celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in the recent T20 World Cup match.

“Three students were arrested on Wednesday after an FIR was registered against them at Jagdishpura police station. They were accused of raising pro-Pakistan slogans in the wake of the India-Pakistan T20 cricket match and posting celebratory messages on social media after Pakistan. The allegation was made. Victory,” a police officer told PTI.

He was produced in a magistrate’s court in Agra on Friday, from where he was sent to 14-day judicial custody, the official said. The police officer said, “Initially an FIR was registered under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505 (making or publishing material intended to promote enmity). IPC in the matter on Friday. Section 124A (sedition) was inserted.”
