Avani Lekhara, the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics, spoke to NDTV about her gold medal winning moment in Tokyo and said she “vacated for a while” after winning the top prize. The 19-year-old shooter said she was overwhelmed after the national anthem was played in Tokyo. “When I won the gold medal I went blank for a while. I was just there and I didn’t know what was happening around me. When the flag went up, when India’s national anthem was played, that was it. So heavy,” Avni Lekha told NDTV.

“I have been receiving so much love and support since then,” he said.

While Avani won the gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 final, 19-year-old Manish Narwal bagged the top prize in the mixed 50m pistol event.

Manish Narwal, during an interaction with NDTV, said that he came to know about the level of competition in Paralympics when he failed to win a medal in the men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 despite topping the qualification.

“The 10 meters is my main event. I’ve won most of my medals in this event. After leading the charts in qualifying and then finishing in 7th place, I realized what the Olympics (Paralympics) really are. Before that I had never lost in the 10m event,” Manish Narwal told NDTV.
