Video: Veteran car racer dies in accident in Chennai

Police have registered a case of death due to negligence.

Chennai:

Veteran car racer 59-year-old KE Kumar died in a horrific accident at the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Car Racing Championship at Madras International Circuit at Irungatukottai outside Chennai in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Live-streamed visuals of the event on YouTube showed the car skidded off the track during the saloon car racing event and overturned after making contact with another car.

Videos of the incident showed Mr Kumar’s speeding car skidded off the track after contacting the front of another car running from his left, crashed into trees at the boundary fence and veered. Parts of the car can be seen falling from the impact. The race was immediately stopped.

KE Kumar was immediately extricated from the debris and after initial check-up at the track’s medical center was taken in an ambulance to the nearest hospital. However, he could not recover from the injury.

“This is a most unfortunate incident. Kumar was a seasoned racer. I have known him as a friend and competitor for many decades. MMSC and the entire racing fraternity mourn his demise and extend heartfelt condolences to his family ,” said Vicky Chandok, president of the meet.

Police have registered a case of death due to negligence and started investigation. The FMSCI, the national governing body for the sport, and the organizer MMSC have also launched an investigation.
